A typed transcript of a speech delivered by Callie Merritt at a meeting of the St. Louis County Historical Society, Duluth, April 29, 1952. The paper gives information on early settlers in Oneota (Duluth), such as Edmund F. Ely, Henry W. Wheeler, and the family of Lewis Merritt. Information is given on the first school in the area which was organized by Ely, Wheeler, and Merritt in 1856. Other topics are pioneer conditions in Oneota; the six school districts formed in the Duluth area in 1858; extracts from an early school district record book (1858); names of early school teachers employed by the school; lists of school age children; and recollections of school and of teachers by some of the early students.

Edmund Franklin Ely was born in Wilbraham Massachusetts on August 3, 1809. He was a choir director, Fourth Presbyterian Church, Albany, New York, and began his ministerial studies (1828). He was appointed by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1832 and left New York, arriving in La Pointe, Wisconsin the following year.
